Don’t Let Your Brain Go on Vacation

During any school break it is important that children stay active-physically and mentally. For parents, there are many fun and educational ways to engage your kids in reading and writing when they are not in the classroom. No matter what grade your child is in, these activities can be easily adapted to entertain your child and make learning fun, but to also  challenge them and keep them mentally engaged in learning.

A great way to incorporate vocabulary practice into “free-time”  is to play word games. Here is a list of suggested games that can be played alone or with 2 or more people. You can create these activities using a themed list of words relating to the holidays or for any special event during the year..

  • Word search puzzles: Create word search puzzles using one of several online puzzle generators.
  • Matching games-Create or purchase a set of cards; challenge your child to match words to meanings, or match synonyms, antonyms or homonyms.
  • Hangman-This game is an easy way to practice sight words or vocabulary words. Playing a holiday or seasonally-themed version of this game can be a fun way to create an interactive activity.
  • Flash cards-Make flashcards with vocabulary on a particular theme to practice spelling, definitions and pronunciations.
  • Charades-Playing charades is fun for everyone! You can make-up your own themes or topics, like movie names, fairytale characters, & book titles.
  • New-Word-A-Week Challenge-Introduce a new vocabulary word each week; Have your child learn its meaning and pronunciation, then challenge them to use the new word in conversation or in their writing.
